INTRO TO BATIK DYING with Shree Desai - Thursday 12th March 2026 - 2.30pm

Thursday 12th March 2026 - Sunday 15th March 2026

NEC, Birmingham

Batik is a “resist” dying process for making designs on fabric.

The word batik originates from the Javanese word ‘tik’, which means to dot. To make batik, selected areas of cloth are blocked out by a brush or drawing hot wax over them, and the cloth is then dyed. The parts covered with wax resist the dye and remain the original colour.

The process of wax resit then dye, can be repeated many times over, to create complex multi-coloured designs.

This workshop introduces you to the following topics, enabling you to create a single dyed fabric piece in class and the knowledge to repeat the process at home:

•    Introduction to batik and other resist dyeing techniques
•    Creating an artwork
•    Understanding of materials
•    Wax combinations and effects
•    Wax application
•    Preparing dye bath
•    Dyeing process
•    Wax removing process

Advisory Note:
Not suitable for children under 16 years, due to hot wax used in this class.
